Mizoguchi the Master
Gerald O'Grady, editor
1996; 80 pp; 93 b&w illustrations; table of contents; acknowledgements; screening sites; filmography; bibliography; tributes of filmmakers; 10.75"x 17.5"
Published by Cinematheque Ontario and The Japan Foundation

Designed to accompany the extensive Mizoguchi retrospective Cinematheque Ontario toured to more than twenty cities in 1996, this catalogue was, in many ways, the first monograph published by Cinematheque Ontario. Edited by Gerald O'Grady of Harvard University and financially supported by The Japan Foundation, it was initially offered as an inducement for ticket purchases to the retrospective, but quickly became a collector's item, and is still one of our most sought after publications. Its unique format, a densely organized newspaper-style journal, allowed the equivalent of a four hundred page book to be condensed into an eminently economical publication of eighty pages. Including essays by dozens of international film critics and historians such as Donald Richie, Max Tessier, Tadao Sato, Dudley Andrew, David Bordwell, and Carole Cavanaugh, the catalogue is an invaluable research for the generalist and scholar alike. In his recently published Mizoguchi and Japan (BFI Publishing), Mark Le Fanu writes: "This catalogue may not be the most beautiful thing in the world to look at, but it is packed full of facts, opinions and readings, from a variety of sources. In addition, it contains the fullest bibliography on Mizoguchi currently available (including the key Japanese sources.)"

Mizoguchi the Master is long out of print, but a reading copy is available at the Film Reference Library.
