A seminal, groundbreaking film, Richard Benner's charming cross-over hit OUTRAGEOUS! stars Craig Russell and Hollis McLaren as two damaged misfits trying to find their way in the perpetually chilly, stand-offish Toronto of the Seventies. Russell plays Robin, a gay hairdresser who's also a skilled female impersonator but lacks the confidence to risk performing. Enter Robin's oldest friend Liza (McLaren), a schizophrenic who's just escaped from the hospital. Together, they struggle to deal with a hostile, uncaring environment and pursue their dreams. OUTRAGEOUS! is fuelled by a disarming optimism and sense of possibility only conceivable after Stonewall and before the AIDS crisis. That optimism seems even more laudable when one considers that it was produced during the tax shelter years, when most Canadian films were shoddy knock-offs of American genre work, saddled with faded American stars. Both Russell and McLaren are utterly winning (Russell won the award for best actor at the 1977 Berlin festival), while Allan Moyle (WEIRDSVILLE) delivers a genuinely intense performance as one of Liza's less than stable friends from the hospital. “A story of hope and courage . . . of two individuals whose will to survive in a world fraught with menace is a triumphant lesson for us all” ( Toronto Sun). Preceded by THE ROMANCE OF TRANSPORTATION IN CANADA, an award-winning, tongue-in-cheek animated NFB short that probes the history of travel across the nation's capacious landscapes. - Steve Gravestock
