THE BEST OF THE NINETIES

THE BEST OF THE NINETIES series, based on a poll of programmers conducted by James Quandt, becomes Cinematheque Ontario's most successful series ever, with 29 of the 30 films in the series selling out. Victor Erice's luminous DREAM OF LIGHT, the top-ranked film, finally secures North American distribution. Iranian master Abbas Kiarostami places four films in the top six spots in the poll and is named Director of the Decade.

  • Critical Note: "You can read Best of the 90s: An Alternative View as an assertion of art's rejuvenating vitality in the face of monolithic Hollywoodism. These movies offer the most dramatic, vivid response to corporate movie-making found in the world today" - Geoff Pevere, The Toronto Star, Friday, January 21, 2000. "Who would have thought that watching paint dry would be the feel-good film of the nineties" - Rick Groen, The Globe and Mail, on Victor Erice's DREAM OF LIGHT, Friday, January 14, 2000.
